Highlights from Term 3 Maths

Check out the some of the things we have been learning about in Mathematics this term.

Coding with Scratch Junior

We are learning about computational thinking by coding using Scratch Junior.

We know how to choose a background, choose characters and to use some of the Motion Blocks to make our characters move.

Today our mission was to create a scene with our character jumping. To do this we learned about the Motion Hop Block. We also learned how to use a loop block to repeat the action.

Spidery Playdough

 On Friday we made some playdough and when we were finished we created spiders with our playdough.

We made spiders because we have been learning the 'sp' blend and our poem this week was Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Matariki

We have been learning about Matariki. We learnt the names of the Matariki stars and how and why Matariki is celebrated. We listened to some Matariki stories and created our own wishing stars.

Pirate Polly

Room One have been reading a book called Pirate Polly. After we finished reading the book we talked about where Pirate Polly may have gone and what she might have done next. Then we wrote a story about Pirate Polly's next adventure.

Monster Madness

We decided to combine writing and art this week. We created monster pictures using dye and vivid and wrote stories about our monsters.

Sir Edmund Hillary

Our topic study this term has been about New Zealand explorers and adventurers. We have studied Jean Batten, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Peter Blake. We listened to their stories and talked about how they showed resilience and perseverance. 

Bubbles

We have been reading a book called 'Bubble Trouble" for our class shared reading. 

We imagined we got caught in the crocodile's bubble and floated up into the sky. We wondered what we would see.

The Robber Fox

Blended Learning during Writing

The children in Room One are beginning to use their class iPads as a tool to support their learning. Today they chose a fish picture to talk and write about. Having the picture they chose on an iPad meant the children were able to zoom in closely to look at specific details, discuss those details with their peers and then have the picture with them as a reference for their writing.

Cody's Birdhouse

Cody's Birdhouse

 A story about Cody's birdhouse by Cody's mum

Cody was helping me clean up outside today and he noticed an old drawer he wanted to pull apart with his tools. He got busy unscrewing each side when he noticed the different shapes that were being made. He decided it looked like it could make the perfect birdhouse. He noticed the panels that were a triangle shape and thought they would make a great roof and the square would be the walls for the house. Together we screwed it up and his dad cut out a hole so the birds had a door. Lastly he found some seeds from the pantry and bread and put them in the house to hopefully attract some birds.
